US Govt Extends H1-B Visa Ban; Move Hits IT-Professionals

In a move that will affect Indian IT-workers and several Indian and US companies, The US government extended immigration bans that may curb the entry of applicants for “green card” and temporary foreign workers in the country. The move has been brought into effect to “protect the jobs of American citizens” especially due to the challenges brought by the pandemic.

The move is going to adversely affect several IT professionals and companies who had been issued H1-B visas for 2021.

Trump made two proclamations, i.e., on April 22 and June 22 ‘2020 freezing work visas for many categories. A few hours before the ban was set to expire on December 1, 2020, the US govt. passed another proclamation and extended the freeze till extend it March 30, ‘21.

The H-1B visas are non-immigrant visas allowing US companies to recruit workers from other countries such as India and China. With the COVID-19 virus continuing to spread in the country, millions of people in the US are depending on unemployment benefits.
